Is there an ABC area, either a forum or actual game rooms, up and running? For the life of me I can't find anything other than the ABC thread on the ridic forum

Here's something I always found helpful about some game sites ( TC for examlpe)  a page or column that showed the game rooms and what players were currently in them. You can see if a certain friend is on or just what game  has several players without having to go into each room or msg the bot in each room. I don't know what implementing this on a botosaurus page would involve, or whether it's even possible or feasible, just something that I always found helpful and am throwing out there as a suggestion.

Hi Kenrick,

Thanks for implementing my suggestion of having two different types of adult play in ABC.  One concern is that the two rooms might be extreme at either end of the scale, but I'm heartened to see you note that it is not a children's game, anyway (which is my experience as well - kids just don't play the game), so I'm hoping I'll find my happy medium in the "PG-13" room, and I'm guessing people will be allowed to say "bloody" at least, now...[Edit: and then some...]

I hope people come!  Maybe we need a word-of-mouth campaign, with people messaging their friends from Talk City, and elsewhere...  Nobody in the room atm, but I have time-zone issues, living in Asia, so probably will play during my lunch break, when it is evening in the US, and on weekends.

Good luck, and hope this new back-to-the-grassroots "hobby" of yours takes off.

Edit: I've never used the MIRC or IRC before, and just tried the Java window... is there anything that can be done about the font size?  Seems a tad tiny for my aging peepers...[nvmd: I just found the font contol]

Edit:  Kenrick, I've just been to the server site, and am checking things out there.  Seem to be some glitches in playing ABC (messaging Alphabot) after changing fonts... could be I still haven't mastered how to maneuvre in there yet...

Took a look at the other forums there, and noticed this comment you made:  "I plan to assign a boatload of operators to help maintain order in the near future..."

As you may tell from my reply to "The Ruler" below, I do not take kindly to the idea of player ops in the ABC room [Edit: and for some reason assumed there would be none at the new site, hence my excitement about this project up to now].  Re-reading the message, I'm sure "The Ruler" meant no harm in their message to me (although I did not ask for it in the first place), and they were probably a Ridic op anyway.  It could be their name and slogan just pushed a wrong button with me...

Please don't get me wrong, I really do not consider myself to be any kind of troll or a trouble maker, although, being human, I might have the odd disagreement here and there.  But I seriously think I speak for a good number of other Acro afficionados, if not an overwhelming majority of them, when I say that player ops in the Acronym game is an 'iffy' idea at best - I do not think it is a stretch at all to assert that player ops at the ABC game in Talk City is what killed the game there in the last few years.  Is there no way to implement my earlier suggestion for some kind of more democratic means to boot seriously trouble-making trolls? (i.e. a /kp (name) command used by, say 60% of players in the room?)

Edit: Seriously, this COULD be a deal breaker for me, and I think others as well, for the ABC game, at least.  Chalk it to a heightened sensitivity among creative types, if you will.

To "The Ruler"

you said:

"duane,
i am sorry that you're so bitter
towards the player ops. I know that there has been a problem in the
past with ops in the ABC game. I have heard stories. Many of the
players that departed TC and went to acro challenge know who i am, and
i'm sure most of them like me, and hold no grudge against me for being
a game op. You're all adults in there and if you wanna go a little
above the pg13 line, fine! I have no problem with that..."

You know, I really don't care what you have a problem with or not now; since you no longer have  your pissant power to lord over anybody in the game anymore, whoever  you are, or were.  As loverly as you tell me people think you are at Acro Challenge, I must say, further more, that your current nick-name and slogan "I am the Ruler, Obey me!" do not exactly make me inclined at the moment to suddenly become endeared to you now, considering all that has gone on before. Am I bitter?  Well, you and your ilk only ruined the game for a whole sh*tload of people for a long time, so yes I guess I have been a little bitter about that.  Maybe we would all have been better off if you hadn't let me know you were an op, in closing, while poo-pooing my "bitterness".

/me jumps up and down! YAY!!! I had the worstest sperience just last nite with that. The room was packed Mach! Just like the old days. It was cool the room was going so fast. The screen scrollin super fast as everyone laughed and chatted. Then it happened....the dreaded champ round. I hid behind the couch, quiet as a little mouse...i didn't even breathe. And low and behold..SONOFA!!! Oh No they did NOT I said to myself. I was champ.  I am on Pirch, and I guess whispers cant post on the screen, and Pirch opens a new winder everytime someone msged me. The tray had a bunch of nicks down thar and the Ridiculist room was not one of em. I had to keep closing winders trying to get back to the Ridic room. Disasterous! I was so ashamed and had let my teamies down. It was traumatic and I really don't know if I'll ever fully recover. ( sourcasm) but Seriously! It's so humiliating!
Thanks for yer hard work Mach, last night was an awesome testament to the game you created and the love and dedication of the players who play it. Much laughter and so many smiles filled that room last nite and that wouldn't have possible without you.

I don't know if Rid would be the same without the champ round. It's fun  picking on each other. :)

But it would be nice if there were a way to not have it when there's less than say 10 people in the room.

I'm all for the death of champ rounds and equality rounds too for that matter. I've no idea if it's possible or if anybody else would like it but one thing I liked about other games I've played is that they keep track of individual scoring, either a running total or a total for the month that resets. And yeah I know it's a team game but it's not much different from the way we used to vote for MVP in tourney, call it personal bragging rights for a month at a time as well as a way to spice up the level of competition.

LOL, if we did it that way, I'd never be able to brag bout nuttin` cept my ability to multitask !!!!

Well, if we're to do w/out champ rounds, just keep it as is. Just have regular and double points. Or, perhaps have a triple points round. That'd make the game go faster. It'd be fine for those who don't have much time to play. Kinda tough thinkin of what to replace champ round with.

Keep leaning toward that No champ round Mach. It stresses me sooo! lol

As far as what to replace it? I aint sure. I sure do love the double point rounds. But prob can't have too many of those, make the game too fast I reckon. Surely someone out here has some replacement idears.

Help Mach out peeps! Other than tossing Miss Okrie around the room, ( teehee just kidding SHEL) I aint sure what to do with that round. Maybe a speed round. Thats a double round, ain't it?

Feedback ya'll ..come on.

Thanks for all the feedback -- I am leaning toward getting rid of the champ round.  Any ideas on a new kind of round to take its place?

I am on board with a "PG13" vs. "NC17" ABC game rooms.  I don't think there's need to go below that since the games are really not designed for kids.  Language use and X-rated acros have always been a sticking point...   that might be one way to alleviate it if there are enough people around for two separate rooms.

It'd be easy to make Finders require longer words.   Do you think there should be a separate room for Finders with 5 letter words?

I'm with Sinny on this one... the timing of the game is what I liked best too.. time to chat and joke around in between rounds with all the fun people there is what kept me coming back.  I liked the casual atmosphere.

As far as the champ, equality, and double rounds go.. they are a nice change of pace.. but if they were modified in some way.. or new kinds of "bonus" rounds were introduced that could be an interesting way to "refresh" the game without messing with the overall timing too much.

I like the way the room is already setup. No need to change. There's plenty of time between categories to chat. Only thing needed are more newer categories.....and perhaps get rid of some old ones.

You're all adults in there and if you wanna go a little above the pg13 line, fine! I have no problem with that (especially if it's a group of regulars and you all know each other, cuz that to me just makes the game that much funner. It's a game, it's about fun). If there's players really pushing that issue then i have been called in by long-time players requesting something be done.  I am not in here or there to treat anybody like kids. I just hope you understand that i know where you're coming from and things will be different and better with this new server.
Just give it a chance! smile.gif (did i just really say that? lol)

I understand you are hosting the acronym game too, right? I think a number of old-time players would be interested in starting to play again.

If so, I would suggest having 2 general areas where players can play in various rooms: one "clean" area and one "adult (or "dirty") one.

This seems to work well on the AcroChallenge game, which you may have heard of. I've been playing there in the past few years. One feature there which I enjoy is the ability to create "topics" rooms, with topics either supplied by the bot, no topic, or topic by the winner of each round. This topic is then displayed in the game. They have extra rounds at the end of each game, for the top 2 or 3 "finalists"... these finalist rounds I can do without; I prefer the game just ending at 30 and a new game beginning, as was the case at Talk City.

I think another good feature to have for troll control, in lieu of player ops, would be the ability for a sufficient majority of players to be able to kick or boot a trouble-making player, using a /kp command. This system has worked for years at the AcroChallenge game for years.

Thanks for starting this endeavor.

edit: check out www.acrochallenge.com, if you don't know what I'm talking about, and want to see what I mean... A download is required to play. but some information is given about the game on the main page.

What is wrong with 2 rooms at 2 speeds? if one really overtakes another, we can always close one or let it sit there ready.

The time between rounds drags a bit sometimes, champ rounds suck. To make it harder, so people cant remember the cats, how about having 30 answers instead of 20 and making it first to 50. Also if the game is a draw, maybe then a champion playoff would be fun.

Ridic has lasted appx. 12 years. I think it has lasted this long because of the way it is. The speed of it now gave time for people to chat in between which other games on TC does not. The same games TC is replacing Ridic with that many have said they don't want there. In my opinion, if you take away the speed of it now, champ rounds, double points etc etc, we might as well stick with TC and play Kaos. The banter and bitching at ribot about things like that (all loving bitching though Mach...lol ) is what made that room what it is. Updating the cats was a good thing and I think its great Alanah & Cam took the time to do that. But other then that, why change something that has worked for so long.

Its just a game, no real prizes, not life or death. People came for the fun of the whole game. If they wanted more competiveness etc etc they joined the tourney. Many didn't want that. They just wanted to sit back, relax and enjoy a game with a room full of fun people.

Just my opinion, but I don't think it needs to change at all....well except for one thing....Mach? Can you tell us all, is ribot a boy or girl?

Hi Mach
A common complaint or suggestion made was to speed up the rounds a tad, making it more in tune with the timing of the tournament games. But then you had others perfectly happy as it stood. And personally, as much as I love the game. I hated Champ rounds more than anything. I like to be able to walk AFK and not have to return to the guilt of missing a champ round and messing things up for the team. I have enough guilt in my life than to have to contend with that. lol
That's all I can think of off the top of me head. Ya'll have a good day!

Does anyone have suggestions about changes to the game or the environment/atmosphere (e.g. maybe rules of play or something) that would make the games more fun?

Or if anyone has ideas for new games I would be happy to entertain the notion...

thanks!
